What are the health benefits
of apples?
The
apple is from the rose family and it comes in many varieties from sweet
to tart tasting and in different colours, typically green, red or
yellow. It originally came from Eastern Europe and south western Asia.
The apple season in the northern hemisphere is late summer to early
winter depending on the variety.
The apple is pact full of nutrient but the
main beneficial ingredients are the flavonoids, phenols, fibre,
fructose and the strong antioxidants, quercetin, catechin, phloridzin,
chlorogenic acid and vitamin C. Apples contain both insoluble and
soluble fibre which can lower cholesterol, relieve constipation, and
protect against cancer (especially breast and colon cancer), heart
attack, macular degeneration, menopausal bone loss, asthma, type 2
diabetes, strokes and increased lung function and increased weight
loss. The soluble fibre pectin, which is within apples, can also help
to expel toxins such as heavy metals like lead and mercury from the
body. The flavonoids within apples have been found to prevent heart
disease and if you prone to kidneys stones, research has shown that by
drinking up to 1 litre of apple juice a day, it will reduce the risk of
developing kidney stones.
