The
curse of eczema is
one of the most common chronic
conditions around, one that affects men, women and children. There are
number
of different types of eczema that affect different areas of the body
and
manifest themselves in a number of different ways, but an itchy red
rash is a
symptom that they all like to share. There
are also quite a number of different things that can cause an eczema
outbreak,
and what causes a specific case, determines what type of eczema a
person is
suffering from. Ten to twenty percent of us suffer from some type of
eczema at
some time in our lives. Eczema can show up at anytime, with warning,
and then
go away just as mysteriously.
Atopic
Eczema
Infants and children
usually suffer form a chronic condition
that is called atopic eczema. Also found in some adults, atopic eczema
is a
chronic skin condition that is triggered by certain allergens. Patches
of red,
dry and itchy skin that come and go with exposure to irratants are the
most
common symptom. People with a family history of asthma and hay fever
are more
prone to get this
type of eczema and the
best type of treatment is prevention through avoidance and keeping the
prone
area well moisturized.
Seborrhea
Dandruff found in adults
and Cradle caps in babies are both
types of eczema that are known as seborrhea. This type of eczema is
typified by
scaly oily patches of yellow skin that can be found on the face, neck
and
scalp. They are not
really sure what the
root cause of seborrhea is but most research points to a type of
parasitic
yeast.
Contact
Eczema
The skin coming into
contact with certain irritants or
allergens is what sets off contact dermatitis.
Itching, redness and even burning are common
symptoms of contact eczema
and it is caused by irritants and allergens found in things like
laundry soap,
perfume, jewelry and lotions.
Dyshidrotic
Eczema
Dyshydrotic Dermatitis
manifests itself as dry skin and
blisters on the feet and hands in both men and women.
Nummular
Eczema
Round patches the size of
coins on the arms legs and chest
that appear after a fungal infection are called nummular dermatitis
(nummular
is Latin for “small coin”).
Neurodermatitis
Hard, dry scaly skin that
appears around an area that is
scratched a bit too often is known as Neurodermatitis.
It usually starts in the area that is
scratched (like an insect bite) and then spreads. This condition is
most common
in women between the ages of 20 and 50 and it is thought that stress
makes the
condition worse.
