ACID REFLUX / HEARTBURN

GERD, an abbreviation for Gastro esophageal reflux disease, is a condition in which the gastric juices from the stomach rise up into the esophagus. It is also called Acid reflux. Heartburn, a burning sensation in the chest, is the most common symptom but chest pain, burping, trouble swallowing, and the narrowing of the esophagus can also occur. People also report having trouble sleeping or believe that food is trapped behind the breastbone.

Food that is about to be digested, enter the stomach by passing through lower esophageal sphincter which acts the sentry that opens to let food pass in, and then closes to keep gastric juices ( the acidic stuff that breaks down your food) from getting out. GERD happens when this sphincter briefly relaxes and allows these gastric juices to reflux, or rise up into the esophagus.

All of us are prone to suffer from acid reflux at some time in our life and this sometime will most likely follow a heavy meal. Besides eating too much greasy or fired food, common causes of GERD include: stress, medications, soda, alcohol, and eating right before bedtime.

Most bouts of acid reflux can be treated with change in diet (less fast food) or lifestyle (less stressful job), or momentarily fixed with antacids like Tums. More chronic conditions are treated with prescribed medications such as H2 blockers, or Proton Pump Inhibitors, both of which work by reducing the amount of acid in the stomach.

Heartburn Affects 1 in 3 Adults

While it is called heartburn, this symptom really has nothing to do with the heart. The esophagus just happen to be situated directly in from of the heart and when the gastric juices travel up it, it feels like your chest is on fire. Many people are fooled into thinking that their condition is a cardiovascular problem instead of a digestive one, not realizing that what is really needed are dietary changes. Heartburn might occur right after eating or right after lying down or bending forward. The burning sensation in your chest could expand to your neck.

GERD prevention

Tight clothing may make your symptoms worse and smoking can also exacerbate heartburn by relaxing your esophageal valve. Greasy, fatty foods like French fries and bacon should be avoided as should ground beef and sirloin. Tomato based sauce is also thought to trigger Acid reflux.  Acidic foods should be avoided as should anything else that could potentially relax your lower esophageal sphincter.

So, if you wish to keep your acid reflux under control without resorting to over the counter drugs, or prescribed medications you can start by eating smaller meals throughout the day. You should also avoid stomach hugging clothing as well as doing any seriously strenuous activity.  Those after meal naps should also be avoided since laying down makes it easier for the gastric juices to climb up the esophagus.  Avoiding the wrong type of foods and keeping an eye on your weight will also help keep the GERD at bay.

ACID REFLUX RELIEF JUNKIES

We are a generation of quick fixes, looking for instant relief from our ailments and often times getting it thanks to profit minded pharmaceutical companies. This convenience, however, often has a steep price. Quick fix drugs may relieve our symptoms, but they really do not do anything about the underlying problems.  Instead of taking time to fix the hole the canoe, we are content with bailing out the water. By treating the symptom and not the cause, drug companies reap enormous profits and keep us in the dark about the problems that may develop from long term use of their so called cures.

Symptoms evolved so that bodies to let us know that something is wrong in a certain area. What drug companies do not want you to know is that. When there is something seriously wrong with our intestinal tract, we experience symptoms like nausea, heartburn, acid indigestion, gas, cramps, diarrhea and constipation. These symptoms are a way for our body to tell us that we need to change our lifestyle and eating habits and when we ignore them we end up suffering even more in the long run.

Acid reflux is not really a disease, but a cry for help from your body. When we ignore the underlying cause of acid reflux and take only seek quick relief from it, the symptoms will only keep coming.  We are forced to keep shelling out money to the drug companies in order to make the pain go away. We become relief junkies and the fixes that we get from the drug companies end up harming us even more than the original problem.

Let us take a brief look at some of the more popular treatment for Acid reflux and see how they work and what their various side effects are.

Antacids

Antacids deplete the acid that exists within your digestive system which keeps your acid reflux at bay and lulls your into a false sense of security. Antacids also block mineral absorbtion which can make the body vulnerable to many diseases like cancer and depression. Many antacids also contain aluminum. Aluminum absorption has been linked to early senility and memory loss.

H2 blockers

H2 blockers reduce the amount of acid the stomach produces, sometimes even stopping the production altogether. Tagamet (cimetidine), Zantac (ranitidine), Axid (nizatidine), Pepcid (fanotidine), and Mylanta AR (famotidine) are some of the most popular H2 Blockers on the mqrket today. These drugs ability to cease normal body function that we saw fit to evolve over time, is seen a major cause for concern. H2 blockers also vie with the body for important detoxification enzymes which allows poisons to accumulate and eventually destroy vital organs. Diarrhea is another possible side effect as is an increased blood alcohol absorption rate ( one drink feel like two or three).

H2 Blockers do not affect everyone in the same way. Some people will experience no side effects whatsoever; well others will show sensitivity to them almost immediately.

Proton Pump Inhibitors

Proton Pump Inhibitors stop the stomach from producing acid altogether curtailing normal stomach function. This ultra strong acid blocker is available by prescription only and is sold under the brand names Prilosec (omeprazole) and Prevacid ( IAnsoprazole). Normal side effects include diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, gas, constipation, reflux acid, head aches, back pain and hair loss. More serious side effects that could happen when you take Prilosec are the development of cancerous tumors in the gut, fatal pancreatitis, necrosis (liver rot) and even a condition called epidermal necrolysis in which your skin first becomes red and scaly then peels off.  Proton Pump Inhibitors can also stop blood cell production, and like H2 Blockers they can, keep your body from cleansing itself of other toxins.

When you choose these drugs over natural treatments for heartburn, there is a chance that you might turn off other stomach functions which controls the absorption of B 12 vitamins.  This in turn can accelerate arteriosclerosis, depression and lead to fatigue, numbness, tingling and other nerve dysfunctions.  You could also increase the impact of a chronic disease which can lead to early aging, cataracts, painful neuropathy and even a heart attack.

Other Findings

Using artificial acid reflux prevention can also hinder the body’s ability to absorb calcium in an efficient manner leading to osteoporosis and poor bone density. Research in the UK showed that people who were over 50 and had been using Proton Pump Inhibitors for the past year had a 44% greater chance of breaking a hip.

While stomach acid can be a nuisance, it is also an important function of out digestive system. It helps kill fungi, viruses and bacteria as well as provides a medium for the absorption of minerals, the digestion of food and the regulation of PH. These are all functions that we need in order to stay healthy. There better ways to beat acid reflux naturally than relying on these quick fixes.

THE MOST COMMON CAUSES OF HEARTBURN

1. Chocolate. Unfortunately, chocolate can be a cause of heartburn. It contains an ingredient called theobromine, a natural compound, which relaxes certain muscles in your esophagus and allows stomach acid to squirt up.

2. Alcohol. Alcohol is another possible and common cause of heartburn. Like chocolate, it relaxes certain muscles and makes way for stomach acid to enter the esophagus. Alcohol also can increase the production of stomach acids, which can cause heartburn.

3. Caffeine. Caffeine relaxes the lower esophagus sphincter which causes your stomach contents to reflux. Anything containing a good amount of caffeine, such as coffee, tea or soda, can cause heartburn to flair up.

4. Eating Right Before Lying Down. If you lay down with a full stomach, the pressure on your lower esophagus sphincter may increase, causing heartburn.

5. Eating In Large Quantities. Eating large meals can increase the risk for heartburn also. Eating a large quantity of food can increase the pressure on your lower esophagus sphincter and cause heartburn.

6. Fried Food. Eating fried foods is also one of the many causes of heartburn. Fried foods will slow down digestion, causing stomach contents to build. This can increase pressure in your stomach, which then can cause pressure on your lower esophagus sphincter which then causes heartburn.

7. Tomatoes. Tomatoes and tomato products can increase the risk for heartburn also. Tomatoes and tomato products relax esophagus muscles, which allows acids into the esophagus and then causes heartburn.

HOME REMEDIES FOR HEARTBURN

A great alternative is a natural cure from the kitchen and is easily available everywhere.

Tea is harmful for the patients of acidity.

Some home remedies for natural cure are:
  • A teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water, taken while eating is effective.
