There are around 200 known species of Bidens and any one of them can be called Bur-Marigold. However, only six of them are actually used as herbal folk medicine. This family of plants got their common name from their two most prominent features: their numerous solitary bright yellow flowers (marigold) and their dark brown seeds with spiky projections (bur). Bur Marigold likes the sunlight and the edge of the forest, but also can be found in partial shade. They can be found all over the world (hence they many different types) even on remote islands.

History

Bur Marigold has been used for hundreds of years for both medicinal and ornamental purposes.
Many cultures around the globe have used the leaves and flowers of the Bur Marigold as a traditional folk remedy to treat a a wide array of different ailments including high blood pressure, liver disease, toothaches and rheumatism. It is especially popular in Africa, the Caribbean, China and Peru. The Native Americans used their continent’s variety of Bur Marigold (Spanish needles) to help with menstrual problems. It was also burned to help repel insects.

Researchers have that the plant does contain some heart healthy flavonoids and antioxidants as well as quercetin which can help with inflammation. The plant also boasts lots of antioxidants, sterols, tannins as well as trace amounts of caffeine, which might make it good for headaches.

Warnings:
Since Bur Marigold is not used too often in these modern times, no real research has been done pertaining to any side effects. Its affects on lactating or pregnant women is unknown.
