GENTIAN

AKA: stem less gentian, yellow gentian, wild gentian, bitter root, pale, olltian, gall weed, Gentian lutea L., G. acaulis L.

Of the plant family Gentianaceae, the Gentian plant has a root that is thick, branching, and yellowish brown. It produces a four foot high erect stem that is erect and hollow. This stem produces bright green tear drop shaped leaves that are attached directly to the stem and have five prominent stems. There are also lower leaves present that emerge from the root.  From July to August, large orange-yellow flowers appear in the upper leaf axils, growing in curls of 3 to 10 blossoms. It bears a fruit that is an obovate capsule.

In moderate doses, gentian is believed to strengthen the entire system: stimulating circulation, building up the blood, and increasing the output of many glands and organs. It is high is simple sugars that produce energy and make it an ideal tonic during convalescence. Gentian can help stimulate appetite making it ideal for the treatment of anorexia or exhaustion. It also helps strengthen the digestive organs, and improves the vascular system allowing the digestive tract to receive a rich supply of blood. It can also mildly cleanse the bowels.

Dosage

Gentian is available in tincture form, which 1 to 3 ml can be taken daily, before each meal. The whole root can also be taken in 2 to 4 gram doses. Capsules are also available, but bypass the taste bus, thus nullifying much of the positive effects.

Side effects

Gentian is an acquired bitter taste that not everyone can handle. It may also induce nausea.
