HAWTHORN
AKA:
Crateagus Oxycanthus, May Blossom, Quick set, Shan-cha, WhitethornThe hawthorn is a small shrub like tree that grows best in the temperate climates of the Northern Hemisphere. They are members of the rose family and characterized by their thorny branches, smooth grey bark, and small pome fruit. The hawthorn berry is a small round red fruit that resembles a crab apple and is very tart to the taste. It is prized in areas such as China, Mexico, and the American South where it is made into snacks, candies, jams and jellies.
The fruit is loaded with B-complex vitamins, as well as many minerals, flavanoids and biovflavanoids. It contains potent antioxidants, which are compounds that help control the harmful free radicals that wreak havoc on our organs and systems. Free radicals increase with our exposure to more pollutants and can alter cell membranes, tamper with DNA and even cause cell failure. Fruits that are high in antioxidants such as tannins and polyphenols help limit the damage that is caused by these naturally occurring substances.

Hawthorn berries have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system and can help strengthen the heart and help safeguard against high blood pressure, chest pain, cardiac arrhythmia and congestive heart failure. This is partly due to the antioxidant effect of the plant, but clinical studies have found it to be just as effective as low doses of the leading heart medication, Captropril, at improving heart function. Patients reported less symptoms related to heart problems and reported being able to exercise better. It has been recommended by Germany’s Commission E and has been used in China to both help the heart and to treat Hepatitis.
Taking hawthorn can help alleviate angina, which is chest pain that is caused by the restriction of blood to the heart. Hawthorn berry might also alleviate chest pain by helping to eliminate plaque build up in the blood vessels and arteries. Plaque buildup in the blood vessels may lead to heart attacks and the build up of plaque in the arteries might lead to stroke. Adding to its many cardiovascular benefits, the herb also can help lower high blood pressure and it is considered safe to take even if you are taking medication for high blood pressure.
The herb can also help lower bad (LDL) cholesterol, according to a study in which rats being fed a high cholesterol diet were given a tincture made from hawthorn berries. The rats given the tincture displayed a reduced production of cholesterol by the liver.
