Foods Increase Memory, Alertness, Mood And Energy Levels
|
We know that the
foods we eat affect the body. But they may have even more of an
influence on how the brain works—and levels of energy and how
it handles its tasks. Mood, motivation and mental performance are
powerfully influenced by diet. There are certain foods and or nutrients
that make a huge difference in how we live and perform throughout our
daily lives.
The brain is an extremely active organ,
metabolically speaking, and as such tends to be very picky and
demanding when it comes to eating. While it may be used to and demand
junk food, for instance, it Needs foods that are high in certain fatty
acids for optimal brain health. The health of your brain depends not
only on how much (or little) fat you eat but on what kind it is.
Intellectual performance requires the specific type of fat found most
commonly in fish, known as Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega 3 is found in
certain fish oils, mostly from the salmon species in fresh water and
the oily salt water types such as sardines, extremely rich in omega
3's, tuna, mackerel and others, to name a few.
Omega 3's are critical to the outer layers of
brain cells, through which all nerve signals must pass. Also, as
learning and memory create new connections between nerve cells, new
membrane cells must be formed to contain these connections. A good
analogy might be adding ram to your computers motherboard. Anyhow,
omega 3 is crucial to these brain components.
It's possible to boost alertness, memory and
stress resistance by supplying food components that are found in
important brain neurotransmitters. One of them is choline, the fat-like
B vitamin found in eggs. Choline has been found to improve memory and
reaction time functions in people, especially the aging population.
Also, choline has been proven to increase endurance in athletes,
especially runners. Here are some other brain boosters, all readily
available...
Sugar can make you sharp—although no one
can figure out what is the right dose at the right time. Carbohydrates
are also effective, especially when eaten with no protein or fat, may
also be mentally soothing. Peanut butter is a good example and works
for me when I need a quick pick me upper. Then, there's chocolate!
Chocolate has been shown to increase endorphins, opiate like chemicals
secreted by the nervous system that stimulate feelings of pleasure and
well being. Now I know why I'm addicted to anything chocolate.
There is a huge amount of information available on
brain metabolism, but following a diet rich in omega 3 is a solid
proven foundation for anyone to start with. Bon appetit'.

Problems? Try These Natural Remedies |
Many factors can affect our memory including
illness, aging, drinking too much, exercising too little and eating
poorly. Memory problems are often associated with the build up of
toxins in the brain. There is, however, plenty that we can do to boost
our mental agility.
What you can do to help treat memory
problems
- Avoid drinking alcohol. Alcohol can damage the
brain and the nervous system.
- Avoid smoking. Smoking can have an adverse
effect on the brain and can reduce the blood flow to the brain.
- Avoid toxic chemicals - in particular fluoride
and aluminium. Individually these chemicals are toxic to the brain but
combined they are very toxic. Other toxic materials that can cause
brain problems include heavy metals such as mercury, lead and cadmium.
- Cleanse your body - including the toxins that
have built up in the brain.
- Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables for
their antioxidant capacities.
- Cut down on the high fat, high sugar
convenience foods - these also contain toxins in the form of additives
and preservatives.
- Make sure that you get plenty of sleep, as
sleep deprivation can cause memory problems and decrease mental
efficiency.
- Make opportunities to use your brain and memory
- do puzzles, learn a new language or musical instrument, go to classes
and study something different, take up a challenging hobby etc.
- Get lots of exercise which can improve the
blood circulation to the brain and nervous system. Exercise also helps
you to relax.
- Vitamins and minerals can help to improve your
memory
o The B vitamins are the most important
vitamins for the brain and nervous system and they promote their
effective operation. Deficiencies in folic acid and other B vitamins
can lead to memory loss, mental confusion, depression and cognitive
impairment.
o Zinc helps prevent the damage to the
brain caused by free radicals. It also improves the function of
neurotransmitters. People with zinc deficiencies have decreased memory
and poor attentions spans.
o Magnesium helps the nervous system to
function and to transmit nerve impulses.
o Vitamin C is required for the
production of neurotransmitters and as an antioxidant it helps to
prevent damage to the brain cells by free radicals.
o Choline and lecithin can directly
affect the neurotransmitters in the brain and are positively linked to
good memory.
Herbs for memory problems
Herbs such as gingko biloba, ginseng and gotu kola can have beneficial
effects on the brain and nervous system. Case Study:
Vitamin B12 deficiency and mental functioning Miss S.
was 69 years of age and she had the following signs and symptoms:
- She was becoming increasingly unsteady on her
feet - she had no difficulty during the day, but was unable to walk if
she got up from her bed at night. When she was in the dark her walking
became increasingly difficult.
- She had a marked loss of balance, due to
increased sensations in her feet and legs.
- She was also showing some deterioration in
mental functioning.
These problems are characteristic of a vitamin B
12 deficiency. A vitamin B12 deficiency is likely to occur in the
elderly and may be associated with thyroid disease and diabetes. She
was initially given vitamin B12 injections.
Vitamin B 12 tablet supplements, as well as the
rest of the B group vitamins and a multivitamin and mineral supplement
would be necessary for the long terms improvement and treatment of Miss
S's condition.

Memory Amnesia |
Amnesia, is a condition where memory is disturbed.
Amnesia affects both organic and functional causes. An example of an
organic cause of amnesia is damage to the brain, through trauma or
disease. Where as an example of a functional cause involve
physcholigical elements such as the defense mechanisms. There is
several different types of amnesia which I have broken down below:
Lacunar amnesia
Lacunar amnesia relates directly the loss of
memory on one specific event.
Global amnesia
Global amnesia is when you lose your entire
memory. It is thought that this is a defense mechanism that are body
instates after a very traumatic event. As a result of this complete
loss, it is common that post-traumatic stress disorder can develop, and
involve the spontaneous and realistic flashes of these traumatic
memoreis.
Traumatic amnesia
Traumatic amnesia occurs most often due to a head
injury, such as falling or being hit on the head. General with
traumatic amnesia the length of the amnesia is directly related to the
extent of the injury itself. In often cases a mild trauma is suffered,
during events such as a car accident, where the occupant of the car
might have an interuption in their memory just before the accident
because of a brief loss in the memory transfer mechanism.
Dissociative amnesia
Dissociative amnesia refers to the long-term
repressed memory that can result in emotional or pschological trauma.
Childhood amnesia
Childhood amnesia, which in several instances is
called Infantile amnesia, is probably the most common type of amnesia -
the failure to remember events from our childhoods. There is many
popular theories as to why we have this loss of memory from our child;
most recently it has been thought to be as a result of language
development or under-developed parts of the brain.

Remedy For Amnesia |
Here
is a real case that gave a great result: a 20 year old young man got
into a car accident and was the only one who survived. He hurt his head
and got an amnesia. After 1 year his family brought him to a
very
old herbalist who completely cured his amnesia and depression in 4
months. According to the herbalist he used a very old recipe that can
be used for an amnesia, shock, fright, head injury and senility. The best time for the treatment is in the beginning of
the summer or in the summer because you will need fresh herbs.
Prepare100 ml juice of young
stinging neetle herb.
(Nettle herb helps with cerebral circulation problems, a stroke,
migraines, a brain damage, a minor traumatic brain injury and
improves brain energy and vitality.)
Grind 100 g
of blue iris (flower) roots. (Blue Iris
helps with vertigo, dizziness, headaches, nervousness and mind
confusion)
Grind 50 g of golden root
(rhodiola rosea).
(Rhodiola Rosea has anti fatiue, anti stress and anti depressant
properties. It increases bioelectrical activity of the brain,
reduces stress and depression and improves memory and brain energy.

Add 1 teaspoon of cloves spice (Cloves improves blood circulation and
cures headaches)

and 1 teaspoon of greater plantain seeds.
(It helps with headaches and weakness)
Mix all the ingredients together. Add 200 ml of spring water, put it on
medium heat until it starts boiling.Take the pot off the stove and
leave it in a warm place for 1 hour (you can cover the pot with warm
blankets). Filter the extract and drink 3 table spoons of it 3 times a
day. There is a chance that you will have
a light belch just for a few days. In light cases,
an amnesia can be cured in just 1 month.

Make sure you are getting plenty of sleep, rest and recreation. Fatigue and a lack of sleep are proven to dampen all
phases of memory. Memory problems are the early warning signs
that stress has gotten out of control.
|
| BEAUTY TIP |
|
According to James Malone, DCH, you should
"stay hydrated and oxygenated. All of the organs of the body require
copious amounts of water and oxygen to function at their best,
especially the brain. Many of the health problems encountered the
elderly are due to dehydration, including memory lapse. The brain uses
a lion’s share of the oxygen brought into the body. Make sure
your living and work spaces are well-ventilated. Deep breathing
exercises as taught in yoga can also improve memory and mind
power."
